Dwayne writes 53 letters confessing and explaining every single thing he's done in great detail. Two of these are handwritten, the rest are typed on a typewriter. Randal finds 48 letters crumpled up in to balls in Dwayne's study after the end. After reading 19 in one sitting, Randal is baffled. He doesn't know how to process any of this, he doesn't know where to begin. Should he use this as proof and turn Dwayne in? Or should he just keep it to himself? Maybe he should just burn these and act as if they’d never existed.
After reading the letters, Randal feels no emotion. He isn't sure what he should feel. So much has happened in the past month, he feels as if he has no more tears left to cry. He feels guilty, stupid, at fault, and disgusting. These people died because of him, because of his stupidity. If he had just listened to his gut, if he thought a little more, if he wasn't so selfish. He hates himself for it.
A few weeks after meeting, Dwayne wrote the first letter and tried to hand deliver it to Randal. He placed it on Randal’s doorstep and started walking away. He didn't get too far, Randal opened the door after hearing some noises and Dwayne turned around and quickly picked up the letter and stuffed it in his coat pocket. Randal notices this but doesn't say anything about it, he thinks it was probably something Dwayne dropped or some trash. They make small talk and plans to hang out soon.
If he only knew.
